[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: James Howlett (born), Logan (current), Wolverine (code name)
SERIES: X-Men movieverse // Earth-10005
CHRONOLOGY: Directly after the end of X3.
CLASS: The definitive anti-hero.

BACKGROUND:

Betrayal and loss have been patterns in Logan's background. The bastard son of Elizabeth Howlett and groundskeeper Thomas Logan, James was an often sickly child, living on an estate in Alberta, Canada, when in 1845 a confrontation between his biological father and Elizabeth's husband, James Sr., ended with James' murder at the groundskeeper's hands. The act was witnessed by young James, which drove him into the first 'berserker rage' of his life. His latent mutation manifested - bone claws that sprang from his forearms and tore out of his knuckles - and in his anger, he ran Thomas Logan through, at which point Thomas confessed the truth about his parentage. These rages are something that Logan still suffers from on occasion, and while he does not relish the act of killing, he recognizes the usefulness of them. The trauma of killing his own father was a driving force behind the way Logan would grow to view taking lives. Unlike Thomas' other son, Victor, who also shared James' animalistic mutant nature and rages, Logan did not allow the dark events of his life or the savagery that was a part of him to be something he took out on others. Still, Victor was the only one who understood his situation, the only blood brother he had in the world, and, for better or worse, the only person remotely 'like him'. Given that they both also possessed a regenerative mutant ability that caused them to age to maturity and then, for all intents and purposes, remain that age, they also outlived everyone they met, making it all the more advantageous to stick together. Even when Victor grew more and more brutal, Logan remained fiercely loyal to him: something he tends to do when it comes to those he forms bonds with. Together, they joined William Stryker's Team X, alongside other mutants, but while the immorality of the team's practices fit well with Victor's style, it grated against Logan's, and he eventually left the team, and his brother.

Stryker would later manipulate Victor into helping him with an incredibly involved manipulation designed to get Logan to volunteer for the Weapon X adamantium bonding procedure. Stryker blackmailed Kayla Silverfox into using her tactile hypnosis to get close to Logan, who fell in love with her and hoped to live a quiet life alongside her, only to have Victor stage her murder, so that Stryker could approach Logan and offer him the tools to get his 'revenge' on his half-brother. The procedure involved bonding 100 pounds of the nearly indestructible material to Logan's skeleton, an intensely painful operation. While Logan could regenerate from practically any injury, it did not do anything to negate the actual pain of the sensations, and this says a lot about the willpower that Logan developed over the years, to be able to face that pain without ever buckling.

Following his confrontation with Stryker after learning the truth, and the bullet to his brain that gave him amnesia, Logan traveled to Japan, where he would learn much in the way of martial arts. Logan's extensive travels have also given him a broad cultural background, and while he may seem brutish on the outside, he actually possesses a keen intelligence, and an incredibly tactical mind. He spent fifteen years on his own in this amnesiac state, taking the name 'Wolverine' from the dog tags he'd had branded upon admittance to the Weapon X procedure, after a story told to him by Silverfox. Eventually, he ended up in Canada again, where he fatefully crossed paths with young Rogue, and X-Men Cyclops and Storm, who took him to the X-Mansion, where he met Jean Grey, and Professor Xavier. He became a part of the X-Men team, although his personality caused him to butt heads with other members (mostly Cyclops) on various occasions. Together, they fought against Magneto, in his ever-increasing war against humanity, and Logan also came up against William Stryker again, who dropped clues about his involvement in Wolverine's current state.

PERSONALITY:

Logan's surface personality is largely defensive, often resulting in his being described as grumpy, disrespectful, temperamental, gruff, and not much of a team player, along with many harsher terms. The reality of this stems from his need for such an attitude - the world he's known has been brutish and violent, many of the connections he's forged have ended in either betrayal or tragedy, and one of his greatest potential vulnerabilities remains that he has large gaps in his memories, that make it possible for those who have met him in the past to attempt to manipulate or take advantage of him, or have the upper hand while dealing with him. It's not surprising at all, knowing all this, that he tries not to leave himself very open or let anyone too close to him too soon.

Underneath this, however, Logan maintains a fierce desire to connect with people, both to fill the void left by all those he's lost, even in memory, as well as to keep him human. Although he might play the part of a loner, Logan would never let the team down, and will always leap to protect (or find a way to avenge) a friend. He's capable of being a great leader, and despite his prickliness, people are often drawn to him, particularly those younger than he is, as a figure worthy of respect. As a result, he easily falls into relationships in which he acts as something of a mentor or father figure to younger mutants (generally young women), who see beyond to his attitude to the compassion underneath.

Logan's natural animal instincts are another important psychological factor in his life. He's constantly at odds with the "animal" within, but wants desperately to remain human, unlike his half-brother Victor, who embraced that animal, becoming increasingly bestial as he evolved into Sabretooth. It's Logan's connection to people, the value he places on innocent life, and his own staunch moral compass that keeps him from losing touch with himself, though it remains a temptation for him, especially in the face of traumatic events that sever those connections. This is often what prompts his instinctive desire to run off on his own to handle situations or cope with his emotions, and it's rare for him to turn to someone else in a time of emotional need.

He may come as overly cynical at times, and he remains one of the only X-Men who doesn't have a problem in taking lives when it's necessary, but this is a matter of necessity to him, not preference. The world he's dealt with has often revolved around the concepts of survival and freedom: while he himself cannot be easily killed, the people around him are much more fragile, and he's taken it upon himself to use his own longevity and durability to fight for those who don't possess it, whenever he can. He's fought in every war that he's found himself in the middle of, from the Civil War, to both World Wars, to Vietnam. Despite having lived for an incredibly long time, he tends to delight in simplicity more than anything, and he puts value on being able to allow people to live simple, peaceful lives. This extends to the mutant community, which is one reason the X-Men align so well with his value system. He's never wanted to have his own personal freedom compromised by what he is, and isn't comfortable seeing that happen to others.

Cynicism isn't the only way Logan deals with things: he indulges in alcohol and smoking, thanks to the fact that his regenerative abilities keep them from doing any damage, or even getting him actually drunk, no matter how much he consumes.

One of the defining characteristics of Wolverine's history, both in the films and comics, is that many of the memories of his life leading up to the period in time in which he eventually joined the X-Men have been clouded, altered, repressed, and in some cases practically eradicated. This does not mean that these early events lose their importance, or influence on the character's psychology. On the contrary, Wolverine's personality remains largely consistent throughout his life, a testimony to the fact that his personal code of ethics is an inherent part of who he is. In the film series, following his confrontation with William Stryker, he received an adamantium bullet blast to the brain that gave him amnesia. In the comics, Logan talks about how his own natural healing ability often will 'heal over' traumatic memories, what he calls 'mental scar tissue', to psychologically 'protect him' in a way. Given that he later suffers nightmares of the adamantium bonding procedure, it's likely that this is how it operates in the movies as well. While he cannot access these memories, they are still there in his subconscious, allowing them to still shape his instinctive reactions to situations. He also maintains skill memory, and seems to have only lost memories of the people and events in his past. This means that he still possesses the martial skill, tactical abilities, languages, et cetera that he learned over the course of several wars, and his time on the special forces X-Team.

POWER:

Regenerative Healing Factor: Wolverine's primary mutant ability is the "mutant healing factor". This allows him to recover from virtually any wound faster and more extensively than a normal human being. He can regenerate from most wounds in a matter of seconds. His healing powers also grant him immunity to all earthly diseases/illnesses and most effects of alcohol, drugs, and toxins. The full extent and speed of Wolverine's healing factor isn't known. He has been shown in the comics to fully heal from numerous gunshot wounds, severe burns covering most of his body, and regenerate missing eyes within a matter of seconds. Among the more extreme depictions of his accelerated healing factor involves him having his skin, muscles, and internal organs incinerated from his skeleton only to fully regenerate the tissue within minutes. Adamantium plays a crucial role in the speed of Wolverine's healing as well because of the fact that it produces a poison that his immune system fights off regularly. It is said that without the adamantium his healing rate increases. This power even amends psychological wounds inflicted as a result of traumatic experiences. However, Wolverine's healing powers force his mind to suppress the memories, sometimes resulting in amnesia. Wolverine sometimes calls this his mental scar tissue.

Superhuman Senses: Wolverine possesses superhumanly acute senses that are comparable to those of certain animals. He can see at far greater distances, with perfect clarity, than an ordinary human. He retains this same level of clarity even in near total darkness. His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, allowing him to detect sounds ordinary humans can't or to hear at much greater distances. He is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if they are well hidden. He can track a target by scent, even if the scent has been greatly eroded by time and weather factors, with an extraordinary degree of success. Wolverine can also use his keen sense of smell to detect lies due to chemical changes within a person's scent. These senses stem from, at least partially, his constant cellular regeneration, as are his enhanced physical capabilities.

Foreign Chemical Immunity: Wolverine's natural healing also affords him the virtual immunity to poisons and most drugs, except in massive doses. For example, it is extremely difficult for him to become intoxicated from alcohol.

Immunity To Disease: Wolverine's highly efficient immune system, which is part of his accelerated healing factor, renders him immune against all known Earthly diseases and infections.

Superhuman Strength: Thanks to his healing factor and adamantium skeleton, Wolverine is able to lift up to 2 tons.

Superhuman Speed: Is able to run faster than 30 mph.

Superhuman Endurance: Thanks to his regenerative powers, Wolverine's fatigue toxins are halted for hours, allowing him to engage in physical activity for far longer than a normal human can.

Superhuman Reflexes: Has greater reflexes than a normal human.

Superhuman Agility: Has greater agility than that of a normal human.

Insulated Weather Adaptation: Wolverine's body is highly resistant to certain elemental extremes, particularly cold, to the extent that he can sleep nude in subarctic conditions with no apparent injury.

Bone Claws: Wolverine's skeleton includes six retractable 12-inch long bone claws, three in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of his forearms. Wolverine can, at will, release these slightly curved claws through his skin beneath the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but the blood loss is quickly halted by his healing factor. Wolverine can unsheathe any number of his claws at once, although he must keep his wrists straight at the moment his claws pass from his forearms into his hands. When unsheathed, the claws are entirely within his hands, allowing him to bend his wrists when they are extended. The claws are made of bone, unlike the claws of normal mammals which are made of keratin, and were originally believed to be bionic adamantium implants. The bone claws are sharp and dense enough to slice through substances as durable as most metals, wood, and stone.

Retarded Aging: In addition, Wolverine's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process. Wolverine was born sometime during the late 19th Century. Although well over 100 years of age, Wolverine retains the appearance and physical vitality of a man in the physical prime of his life.

Animal Empathy: Wolverine has the ability to sense the emotional state of animals on a basic level such as fear, anger, happiness or pain. He can even communicate with them to make the animal aware of his actions and or his intent.

Adamantium Laced Skeleton: Not part of Wolverine's natural mutant attributes, Wolverine's entire skeleton, including his bone claws, are laced with the rare, artificial, and virtually indestructible alloy known as adamantium or True Adamantium. As a result, Wolverine's bones are virtually unbreakable. The presence of the Adamantium has further enhanced the already razor sharp edge of Wolverine's bone claws. Aside from being practically indestructible, the claws are capable of cutting any solid material, with the known exception of True Adamantium and Proto-Admantium. However, Wolverine's ability to slice completely through a substance depends upon the thickness of the substance and the amount of force he can exert. The Adamantium also weights his blows, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of his punches and kicks.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: How your character will be addressing the game at large. This sample should follow the same rough format as Cape&Cowl proper — a first-person, text/audio/video-based, intentional post to an internet community. Preferably more than a paragraph in length, this sample is to show us your character's unique voice. If you can make us laugh or outright scare the pants off us, you’re doing a good job!

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: The name of the game is introspection, folks. This sample will both showcase how you will play in the logs community, and how well you understand your character’s motivations, hopes, dreams, quirks, etc. This sample should be a bit longer than your first, and, again, make us cry, make us laugh, or make us never want to meet your character in a back alley and you’re doing a good job!

A note: In the cases of both first person and third person samples, we do NOT accept links to samples written at other games. If, however, you are a returning player applying for a character that you have played previously at Cape&Cowl, you are allowed to link to posts made by that character in this game.

FINAL NOTES:
Is there anything else about your character that you feel we should know, that isn't covered in any of the earlier sections? Inventory, status of health, etc? This field is optional.
